Common Gallbladder Diseases
It is important to understand the symptoms and possible treatment plans for various gallbladder disease, including:
- Biliary Dyskinesia: This condition occurs when the gallbladder does not contract or empty properly. Patients with this condition often experience pain. Treatment for biliary dyskinesia is typically removal of the gallbladder through laparoscopic cholecystectomy.
- Gallbladder Inflammation: Typically gallbladder inflammation is due to gallstones or a gallbladder infection. If gallstones are present, gallbladder surgery may be required. Infection may be treated with medication or surgery.
- Gallstones: Gallstones can develop in the gallbladder or in the bile ducts of the gallbladder. This condition can be very painful -- and very serious because the bile back-up may cause liver damage. Various treatments for treating gallstones exist, including gallbladder surgery.
- Obstruction of Gallbladder Bile Ducts: This can be a serious medical condition because bile can back up into the bloodstream, creating a dangerous medical situation. Treatment may require gallbladder surgery to remove the obstruction.
- Gallbladder cancer: Gallbladder cancer can be difficult to diagnose. When a proper diagnosis is made, treatment typically requires gallbladder surgery to remove the gallbladder and bile ducts. Traditional cancer treatments such as chemotherapy or radiation may also be required.
Gallbladder Surgery is Often Required to Treat Common Gallbladder Diseases
Patients who suffer from any of the common gallbladder diseases described above often face traditional gallbladder surgery. A newer alternative, laparoscopic gallbladder surgery, is known as laparoscopic cholecystectomy. The removal of a gallbladder during laparoscopic gallbladder surgery is often touted as a safe alternative to traditional gallbladder surgery. However, both types of surgeries have risks.
There are several common risks associated with a laparoscopic cholecystectomy. The greatest risk associated with laparoscopic surgery is that the surgeon may cut the common bile duct during the procedure, leading to serious complications.
If your common bile duct was cut during gallbladder surgery, you may be the victim of medical malpractice.
